May is Bike Month, and there’s no better time to celebrate the joys and benefits of cycling in National Landing. As a community that values sustainability, health, and alternative transportation, National Landing is a haven for bike enthusiasts and casual cyclists alike. At the heart of the local cycling scene is Conte’s Bike Shop, a fixture in the National Landing cycling community. We sat down with Amrit Lidder, the Shop Manager at Conte’s National Landing location, to learn more about what makes this neighborhood so special for cyclists.
“D.C. is so underrated for cycling,” Amrit shared. “We get to be a part of helping people explore National Landing and showing them the different routes available. The routes are very approachable, so whether you’re a novice or a seasoned rider, there’s something for everyone.”
For those new to cycling or looking to start biking to work, Amrit has some advice: “Don’t be scared. Definitely come into the shop and chat with someone to help get you the right gear. We’ll walk you through it and get you all the proper accessories. And don’t be afraid to ride with other people – cycling is very much a social sport.”
Conte’s offers a diverse range of bikes from renowned brands such as Cannondale and BMC. Whether you’re into high-end mountain bikes or seeking a reliable commuter bike, Conte’s has something for everyone.
Dweck Properties is proud to be a part of this bikeable community. The majority of our communities are strategically located in areas that encourage biking and provide easy access to public transportation. In fact, 70% of Dweck communities are 3 blocks or less from Capital Bikeshare stations and are considered “Very Bikeable” on WalkScore.com.
Dweck also participates in the Champions program with Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP), promoting sustainable transportation options for residents and team members. Last year, Crystal Flats partnered with ATP and Velocity Bikes to host a bike tune-up event for residents, and this year, Crystal City Lofts is conducting a resident commuter survey to find ways to encourage sustainable travel to and from work.
This year, The National Landing BID celebrated Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17th with a Bike to Work pit stop featuring complimentary coffee and snacks, giveaways, and more in one of the area’s coolest spaces – the Water Park. Hundreds of cyclists stopped by the event celebrating bicycling as a fun, low-cost, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to get around!Â
The cycling buzz doesn’t end there. Each year, the National Landing BID hosts the exhilarating National Garage Racing Championships, where cyclists venture underground to compete in the Crystal Drive Parking Lot. This distinctive event offers a thrilling course through the low-ceiling setting of a parking garage. Competitions include the men’s and women’s fixed gear championships, a four-person relay race, and the much-anticipated Anything Goes event. The next championship is set to take place in 2025.
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, there’s never been a better time to embrace the cycling lifestyle in National Landing. Happy Bike to Work Month! We hope to see you out on the trails.
